The Lodge was granted it's Charter from the Grand Lodge of Scotland 6th February 1948. The very same Charter is still in use today. The first meetings were held in the halls at Mosspark Boulevard. The Lodge then moved to Rutland Crescent and then to the current Temple at Mafeking Street in Ibrox. The spirit and enthusiasm of the Brethren has always been exempliary. It has always been our duty to build on the foundations laid by the Brethren who formed the Lodge.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE 1426

A group of Freemasons meeting in a railway shed at Corkerhill Village came to a memorable decision. They would try and establish their own Lodge in that area. Their main reason for forming their own Lodge was sparked by the fact that being railwaymen they all found it very difficult to attend their respective Mother Lodges and that at that time there was no Lodges near the village that they could attend.

Their first discussions were held in the Village Institute, where they eventually decided to go ahead with their ambitious plan on 29th January, 1947. Petition was received from Provincial Grand Lodge Secretary on 6th March,1947.

On 4th April, 1947 the first Office Bearers were elected.

The first Right Worshipful Master to be elected was Bro. John Beaton MacLean, who was a Master Mason of Lodge Neptune No. 419. The meeting was held in the halls at 570 Mosspark Boulevard, which is now the Halls of the Craigton Unionist and Conservative Association. All the Lodge Regalia was purchased on 7th September, 1947. Provincial Grand Lodge approved all the preparations and on 5th February, 1948 a Charter was granted and the number on the Roll of the Grand Lodge of Scotland was One Thousand Four Hundred and Twenty Six.

The Consecration Ceremony took place on 5th March, 1948. Sponsoring Lodges were Lodge Neptune No. 419 and Lodge St Columba No. 729. The Founders Fee was 3 Guineas and the forty eight founder members came from: Lodge South Western No. 1242; Lodge The Gael No. 609; Lodge St. Andrew No. 601; Lodge Troon Navigation No. 86; Lodge Thorntree No. 512; Lodge Spiers of Elderslie No. 1102; Lodge Ellangowan No. 716; Lodge St. Mary No. 31; Lodge St. James Paisley No. 1116; Lodge Bow Fiddle No. 1349; Lodge Bishopbriggs No. 1259; Lodge St. James No. 1218 (Coltness); Lodge Anima No. 1223; Lodge Clyde No. 408; Lodge St. Adrian No. 185. Indeed, Lodge Corkerhill was surely founded by a very wide and experienced group of Founder Members and their reward was the laying of the Foundation Stone in the new Temple.

Rutland CrescentIn 1957 it was decided to move the Lodge's meeting place from Mosspark Boulevard to Lodge Plantation's Hall at Rutland Crescent, at Paisley Road Toll, where, due to the energetic and industrious work of the attending members, the Lodge's foundations were securely established. The Lodge had very good and demanding service from the successive Office Bearers and Brethren. Indeed, the well-being of the Lodge throughout the nineteen-fifties and sixties was in itself proof that the members supported and enjoyed their Masonic meetings. The Lodge continued to meet at Rutland Crescent for the next twenty two years.

At a Management Committee Meeting on 3rd May, 1978 part of the business was the discussion of the possible purchase of a property at Mafeking Street. It was agreed by a Sub-Committee to arrange a meeting with the owners of the property and after lengthy discussions we were delighted when the owners offered us the opportunity to purchase the property at a very reasonable price. At the next Regular Meeting of the Lodge it was proposed and unanamously agreed that we should proceed with the purchase of the property.

After hard and heavy work to renovate the property, which was carried out by the Brethren of the Lodge, the conversion and change of use of the property was completed in April 1980. The Temple was then inspected by a Deputation from Provincial Grand Lodge's Bye Laws Committee to assess its suitability to hold Masonic Meetings. It was found to be so, and on the 5th June, 1980 the Lodge was granted a Certificate of Habitation. The reward for all the hard and dedicated work well done was that Lodge Corkerhill now had a new Temple in which to hold their meetings.

The first Regular Meeting to be held in the new Temple was held on 6th June, 1980.

A Special Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge of Glasgow was held at Mafeking Street on Saturday 7th February, 1981 for the purpose of Consecrating the Temple of the Lodge in accordance with Ancient Masonic Custom. The PGL Deputation was headed by Provincial Grand Master Bro. William Fleming assisted by Brothers William C. Shepherdson, Depute Provincial Grand Master, Henry Jeffrey, Substitute Provincial Grand Master, Rev. John Stewart, Provincial Grand Chaplain, Sydney Carson, Provincial Grand Secretary and other Office Bearers of Provincial Grand Lodge of Glasgow.

The Lodge has long since established itself in its Temple at Mafeking Street. There is no need to name the small band of very dedicated brethren who proved themselves to be good and true masons by deed as well as word in rebuilding this very fine Temple. The Lodge will be forever in their debt as we continue to thrive in good and wholesome Freemasonry.
